“I got you something,” Taehyung says, when Seokjin opens the door to his apartment. The gesture is uncharacteristically thoughtful, and there’s a special emphasis on you that Seokjin can’t help but notice.

“Oh? Is it my birthday?” He deflects, instantly regretting it, with the way Taehyung’s eyes go wide with surprised hurt. Quickly, he backtracks. “Thanks, you shouldn’t have.”

“I wanted to,” Taehyung says. The words are so sincere that the hair on the back of Seokjin’s neck goes up.

Seokjin busies himself with opening the gift, and instantly regrets that, too. He pulls at an expensive bottle of champagne and then a small box that feels heavy: both literally and with meaning. It’s the type of box that holds jewelry.

“Tae-ah, this is too much,” he chides, stalling. The current is there again, and he feels his heart rate pick up.

“It’s just something small,” Taehyung insists, shifting side to side. His hands are clasped behind his back, and Seokjin can’t help but note how the position calls attention to his triceps and biceps. It would be hard not to notice, they aren’t well hidden underneath his cabled sweater. Probably intentional. That type of posturing would read as insecurity on anybody else, but this is Taehyung.

Seokjin swallows, now caught between equal evils—Taehyung’s gift and the sight of him.

“Do you think it would be possible to expand operations to Korea?” Jungkook asks.
Taehyung sighs over the phone. “Jungkook, are you aware that not once, but twice you’ve called me in the middle of the night in a single week?”
Jungkook pulls the phone away from his face to glance at the time in surprise. 1:00 am. He’d stayed up late because of jet lag and because he’d gotten lost in his research about the Korean market for phone games. “Shit.”
“Yeah, shit. Besides, I’m a coder, not your COO. Shouldn’t you be calling them up for these sorts of business decisions? Not me.”
Well… perhaps.
“Tae-bear, what’re you doing? Come back to sleep.”
Tae bear?! “Is that Yoongi?”
“Ah—well—”
There’s a rustling noise and then suddenly, Yoongi’s voice comes through the line. He must have confiscated Taehyung's phone. “Is this Jungkook?”

“Yes—”
“Stop calling in the middle of the night.” He has the tone of a mob boss threatening a very disobedient underling. Jungkook doesn’t really care.
“Tae-bear?” he asks.
He can perfectly imagine the blush on Yoongi’s face as the man blusters in response. “Look! That’s personal—!”
“Sometimes he calls me baby-bear,” Taehyung calls from somewhere close to the speaker.

finally finished draft 1 of chapter 6/7 of reasonable to want. It's a fucking disaster, so bear with me for now. Here's a WIP Wednesday as an offering. im a sucker for this mini trope🌽

“Hey.” The ocean wind almost snatches away Namjoon’s voice as he approaches.
Jungkook turns. “Hey.”
“Nice view, huh?”
Namjoon turns to look out at the water, and Jungkook takes him in. The wind is whipping at his hair, exposing the smooth slope of his forehead.
“Yeah, it’s beautiful,” he murmurs.
Namjoon looks up, just in time for Jungkook to turn back to the water. “Why’d you come out here?”

“I’m glad you came anyway. What convinced you?” Jimin asks.
Unthinkingly, Jungkook’s eyes search out Namjoon’s figure. He’s laughing at something Hoseok just said. Both of his dimples are exposed, and his eyes are half closed, forming the shape of two crescent moons. He looks so happy right where he is, and Jungkook feels unbearably fond. So fond that his heart will burst if it squeezes anymore. Suddenly, Namjoon makes eye contact with him from across the room, his smile growing impossibly bigger. Jungkook feels his own mouth curve in answer, before pulling his gaze away, trying to rein in whatever expression his face is making.
“Oh,” Jimin says, meaningfully.
Jungkook yanks his gaze back to Jimin’s face, even though he can tell he’s still blushing. “Oh?”
Jimin smiles knowingly. “That convinced you.” He nods in Namjoon’s direction.

For those curious, I reconstructed the math I did last year to determine the total of first tagged Namjin fics there were in june '24. My explanation of methods below, including timestamp from discord ⬇️

The numbers I came back with were at MOST 5000 out of the 24572 first tagged namjin fics.

How many fics are REALLY namjin fics out of the total
AKA the First tagged namjn fics divided by total namjin fics method using the defunct first tagged chrome extension
AKA I hate it here, why can’t I have nice things?

So, the first tagged extension worked (rip) by hiding any fics tagged with ur ship when they were not the FIRST tag listed. The numbers ao3 spit back were simply the # of pages of fics for your ship (including non-first tag fics)—not the # of fics hidden/not hidden.

Without easy numbers of hidden/unhidden fics, doing the math was challenging and a bit of guesswork. In '24 I ran some # based on assumed averages. Based on searching through multiple pages (but not all of them) including the first kudos pages, and middle of the pack kudos pages, the average amount of fics per page (based on size of summary and tags) seemed to be ~20. For namjin the average amount of fics ‘not hidden’ aka the first-tagged namjin fics were 2-3, about 10-15% of fics tagged namjin have namjin as the main paring per page. I then multiplied that by the total amount of namjin fics. If these averages hold up the total amount of true namjin pairing fics was ~2457 - 3685 in 2024. Even assuming my original averages were wrong I think it’s safe to assume that in 2024 this number was not greater than 5000.
