I have lived in authoritarianism before, and participated in a popular movement against it. My political voice was born in it. I was just talking to a friend - this moment is *triggering* because it feels like so few people are reacting on the magnitude of what I know is coming.

The US gov is using AI to search social media for dissenters to deport, expel, or imprison

It starts with support for Palestine, which they call terrorism. It's only a short jump to imprisoning Trump dissenters

Should we be advising our foreign students to scrub their social media?

In an unprecedented move, the US National Institutes of Health has begun mass terminations of research grants that fund active scientific projects because they no longer meet “agency priorities”.

Exclusive: NIH to terminate hundreds of active research grants
Studies that touch on LGBT+ health, gender identity and DEI in the biomedical workforce could be terminated, according to documents obtained by Nature.

‘Science can and should as a community organise itself to maximise its ability to act collectively, ethically and – when necessary – politically.’ The scientific community needs to speak up – not just for the sake of science, but of human decency, dignity and morality.
I have run out of patience with the apparent silence of most US science institutions (and not just US) in the face of Trump & Musk's rampage. There are of so many facets of that, but in this column for @chemistryworld.com I talk about the assaults on inclusion.

Scientific institutions have a long history of anticipatory obedience
Societies should learn from this and speak up to support inclusion
