James Baldwin’s message was simple: we’re afraid of love, because we’re afraid of exposing our true selves.
The Lives and Loves of James Baldwin
An older generation dismissed him as passé; a newer one has recast him as a secular saint. But Baldwin’s true message remains more unsettling than either camp recognizes.

Trump began his presidency with an onslaught of executive actions meant to dismantle all governmental institutions and agencies that offer any lifeline for Black, Brown, Indigenous, and poor white communities. His actions highlight the Democratic Party's refusal to operate as a true opposition.

Whenever I’d encounter a truly stunning passage in a book I was reading, I used to share it on social media.

Increasingly, I’m going back to my pre-Twitter practice of — brace for it — writing it down in a notebook.

It seems to have a greater impact there.

I love this passage from “Rehearsals for Living.” Undoing settler-colonialism and its deformed offspring will benefit ALL the peoples of the world. In fact, it will be a pre-condition to any meaningful survival that is not mere barbarism. #LandBack
