As someone who really did enjoy Suikoden 3 despite (or because) of its messiness, it’s such a let down to go from such a great cast of the unique 108 stars to the most generic and redundant of the series. Why are their 5 mermaid sisters that do the same thing? They don’t even fight!

The reveal that Ted, the lonely immortal from the first game, was briefly convinced to give up the Death God in his hand by some Metaphysical Alien being as part of some cosmic war we barely see the edges of is cool! Suck we get there by waking in a straight line for 15 min fighting randoms!

I will say, I do dig these sequences where your guy travels into the Cursed Rune he’s bearing and encounters the souls it’s absorbed over the years, and you have to free them by battling them and I guess consigning them to the Abyss. Anyway heres the protagonist Obliterating a child. Grim stuff!

What’s worse is that at the end of the three days, the boat you’ve built out of… coconuts, rope and wood looks like ass! What the fuck are those palm leaves supposed to do? Catch vibes?

The padding in suikoden iv is bumming me out. Youre stranded on a desert island, for three days you have to choose between picking up coconuts, rope, or wood, and then enter a cave every day to scare away a mermaid chick that looks like a ripoff of a straight to video Barbie Mermaid Princess Movie.

Shame that it seems Handsome Duckmen won’t be making a return as the unique fantasy race for this game. So far we just got a cute but generic furry adjacent Cat Guy race. Hoping we get something weirder down the line. I’ll always remember you, Sgt. Joe!!!

Playin suikoden IV. First off, obvious criticism: encounter rate is cranked way too high. If it takes fifteen minutes to sail anywhere, you should not be battling every 30 seconds. Maddening. The environments are so far dull, the style leaning into generic realism makes it feel p lifeless. However….
