After a bruising 42-day shutdown, the government has finally reopened. We took a look at what's next for federal science—how quickly things will get back up to speed and whether there will be long-term consequences.

With Jeff Tollefson and @alexwitze.bsky.social:
The US government shutdown is over: what’s next for scientists
Government researchers are heading back to work, but questions about the size of research-budget cuts will extend into next year.

Radio detection of air-showers independent of a particle detector providing the trigger is a big step towards future observatories of cosmic rays and eventually ultra-high energy neutrinos! 🔭🧪
These atomic nuclei, which rain down from the sky with an energy a million times greater than that of particles accelerated in the LHC at CERN, were detected for the first time using radio antennas operating autonomously and systematically, deployed in the Gobi Desert in China.
The GRAND project has observed its first cosmic rays!

🔊 Two really massive black holes, COLLIDING💥!

LIGO has seen ~300 of these collisions since 2015, but this one is HUGE creating a black hole 256x the mass of the Sun. It's likely the merging black holes were themselves the by-product of previous mergers 🤓🔭🧪
