today instead of buying barely discounted crap, get a paid subscription to an independent media outlet! a little $ goes a long way towards supporting a free press. 🗞️

drop links to your own or your faves in the replies so ppl can easily sign up (bonus if you add a couple words about why it’s good!):

Touch to play the chalkboard! I did a deep dive on the Beam Sound Board featured in the Florian Schneider estate auction. I even managed to find a very close relative, which I show here, designed in communist times Czech. more over on YT:

Some distortion and feedback is totally fine, but they never let it get in the way of the main melody. The band operates in a self-contained, almost childlike universe, wherein the normal rules of physics don't apply.

I saw "Batman Begins" at a theatre that was showing it on rotation. As we filed in, the closing credits from the prior show were still running. Someone behind me said "Batman Begins? This is more like Batman Ends."
A reminder that watching a film in the 1930s was not a purist experience, from John O’Hara’s ‘BUtterfield 8’, 1935.

I dreamed a burglar broke into a mansion in New England. It was abandoned, so he started squatting there. In one of the rooms he found a collection of rare Portuguese fado records, LPs and 78s. He turned the ground floor of the mansion into a bar so that people could come and listen to the music.

Lamonica looks to the future (One Way Ticket) and the past (Hot August Night) in his lyrics. He is an optimist despite the current Stateside mess. The songs on Pony Tales come out swinging, not to throw a punch, but as an invitation to dance the night away.

Another recommendation for mystery lovers: Seicho Matsumoto's 1958 novel "Tokyo Express" (also published as "Points and Lines").

This police procedural is a tightly plotted tale of murder and corruption. You can read it in less time than it takes Inspector Mihara to travel from Fukuoka to Sapporo.
