Have you tried Depth of Night? I’m not entirely sold on it (the RNG can be pretty brutal, esp with some of the passives) but still playing fairly regularly and enjoying it, overall.

From what I’ve heard Malazan has a reputation for being a difficult read, at times. So don’t beat yourself up too much! And yes, Robin Hobb is the author of the Elderling books; highly recommend it. FitzChivalry Farseer may be the best written character, ever.
