16: One Night in Hartswood by Emma Denny. Historical romance, light on the historical, was the pitch I got. Raff Barden shows up to his sister’s wedding but the groom has vanished. Meanwhile, William ‘Penn’ de Foucart flees his betrothal. For gay reasons. They unknowingly run into each other and… :3

this kit was a huge amount of fun to do - lined sleeves, beaded belt pennant, a train with burnt pages about his life and downfall
genuinely one of the best kits i’ve ever made for a larp, and people were SO lovely about it, recognising him instantly
also, draughir makeup was very fun :3

15: Tideborn by @elizachanwrites.bsky.social. Another year, another tsunami of emotion and profound transformative writing from Eliza Chan’s Drowned World duology. To help me I’ve put my summary for my friends’ Discord server here too, but GOD. You are capable of learning. You are capable of change.

14: Foxfire, Wolfskin by Sharon Blackie. Mixed feelings on this one as I’m a habitual hater of “modern feminist retellings”, but some beautiful evocative writing and strong characterisation in here nonetheless!

13: Ascension by @stgibson.bsky.social. Holy SHIT I loved getting back to these characters again, a year after reading Evocation. Having managed to reverse engineer Catholic guilt for myself as a kid, this was a challenging read, but GOD the conclusion was so worth ittttt. I love my idiot sorcerers

12: Shoestring Theory by Mariana Costa. High Mage Cyril hurls himself back in time to try and stop Crown Princess Tigris’ death (and her brother, Cyril’s husband, inheriting the throne and destroying everything in madness). Twists and turns, beautiful and emotional. Adored this one so much 🥺

11: Hunt for the Shadow Wolf by David Gow. Equal parts delightful & gut wrenching, Gow brings us to the long-vanished final days of a species we have sought to exterminate with religious fervour. Painful as we read over & over how we delighted in their slaughter; hopeful as we look to the future.

some of my darling friends ran their first #empirelrp player event today! thoroughly enjoyed unsettling everyone who normally knows me as a shrewd urizeni cambion meeting my sweet, welsh-accented marcher lad!
(dagged mantle and all patches except the sheep brooch and bounders patch were made by me)

10: Our Haunted Shores, ed. by @hauntedshores.bsky.social. Exploring tales of terror from the coasts of the British Isles from the 19th to early 20th century. Creepy, delightful, haunting. Dunsany’s piece was definitely my favourite, but the cryptozoology lover in me has to mention HG Wells’ too.

9: Reading the Rocks by Brenda Maddox. Tracing a line through a core group of British geologists and people they came into contact with across a key series of Victorian developments in geology as a science and our understanding of the age of the Earth, its history - and our own.

(love moths big enough to hear the wing beats and the thumps as they give themselves concussions on the ceiling)

8: Thyme Travellers ed. by @soniasulaiman.bsky.social. A collection of 14 speculative fiction stories by Palestinian diaspora authors, exploring a myriad of themes: love, loss, exile, belonging, family, legacy, oppression, colonialism, home, leaving - and returning. I laugh, I ache, I weep.

7: Tell Me I’m Worthless by @hangsawoman.bsky.social. I have not been so fundamentally moved by a book in years. Perhaps ever. Two days after I started reading this, the Supreme Court ruling dropped. I had to put it down for a time. Remembering that in the context of this book? I could weep. 1/2

6: Cemetery Boys by @aidenschmaiden.bsky.social. Queer spooky fun in LA’s Latino communities, where a trans boy fights to be accepted, tries to find his vanished cousin, and accidentally summons the school rebel’s ghost. Called the twist by a mile but that didn’t take away from the finale. Loved it!

5: Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell. Waterstones Book of the Year but unfortunately this fell flat for me. Moments of fun writing or quirky characters was massively undercut by chapters too eager to be self-contained, and an uncomfortable level of how much one’s Birth And Breeding matters

like the below is the stuff i’ve designed for menhir’s fate. i’m still up in the air on if it’ll be my kind of larp, and i can’t make any event until their last one of the year in september, but i had tremendous fun putting this together and making it flavourful
