putting one foot in front of the other is the best I can do right now
an not-insignificant number of older women too

ask me how I know

I'm in week 2 of a month-long 'do I want to try to emigrate here' stay overseas

I don't think you're being too critical; it grated on me too as soon as you pointed it out. Thanks!

that it justified a HIGH PRIORITY email no less

Respectfully disagree. I'll eat Lindt bonbons if that's all there is and I'm *really* in the mood for chocolate.

In Portugal right now and a little surprised by how dire the chocolate is here. Like, Lindt bonbons ARE as good as it gets here.

Agree re: white chocolate. Not chocolate, has its uses.

A difference between a 15 year old and an 8 year old?

A difference, yes, maybe even a big difference, BUT:

If the question is 'can you, an adult man, justifiably have sex with this child?' then THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL BETWEEN A 15 YEAR OLD AND AN 8 YEAR OLD

Beyond stupid. Here in the SF Bay Area, the holiday performances of Nutcracker essentially pay for the rest of the year's programming. I'm sure it's not just SF where no Nutcracker means your ballet company is in the red. Nobody at the Kennedy Center has a clue what they're doing.

I hear that! We do what we can, and if we're lucky a day arrives when we're able to step back and decide to try something new or more, and if that day doesn't come we keep on doing what we can as long as we can
November 13, 2025 at 5:39 PM
in my experience pushing it down only works for so long and requires an ever-increasing effort

not that I don't try it first, every time

eventually I do get the message though

best wishes to you

Yup. It's amazing to be in Portugal, a country that is widely regarded to be a poor one (in terms of GDP etc), and to see how ordinary people receive a much higher level of public services here.

I'm currently in Portugal and scheduled for some dental surgery Monday that will cost me less than my co-pay for the same work in California. I didn't come here especially for dental care! But I'm here for two more weeks and I thought heck why not?

yeah walking past my best friend's older brother and his friends and having them snicker 'yeah gonna give you every inch of my love heh heh heh' did NOT make me interested in listening to Led Zeppelin

I hear it's good but I truly don't give a shit
November 12, 2025 at 9:43 PM
wow the guy who went on the record saying ladies just don't have the right kind of brains for doin' hard stuff like math also was okay with rich dudes exploiting girl children, who'd a guessed that?

shocked

I aged out of mandatory hotness during my late 40's-early 50's and it's so great

nobody apparently wants to fuck me except my actual partner, best thing ever
November 12, 2025 at 9:19 PM
yeah me too

I still associate the music playing on their car radios — Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC — with that experience and I don't care to listen to any of it even though it's been more than 50 years

classic rock? none for me thanks
November 12, 2025 at 9:17 PM
I agree! I don't blame myself for this (and I had some childhood factors tending towards being a hypervigilant adult, too) but I want to experience my life as more than a series of problems solved (or not) and disasters averted (or not). It's a project!

I've been working for years to shift my perspective so that I notice what's going well along with what's not right at all. Little by little I'm turning toward pleasure and joy, but since it's not how I seem to be wired, I have to stay committed to the project or I definitely backslide.

Which I believe might be the goal here: tie medical care to employment so big business doesn't have to worry about losing their best employees when they start up their own entrepreneurial adventures.

I have literally only had a paid holiday at the three jobs where I was represented by a union (one restaurant, HERE, two universities, AFSCME and AFL-CIO).

A total of 4.5 years out of 45 years of working for a living.

Although to be honest, 28 of those years I've been self-employed so...

I don't remember the last time I saw a new sweater for sale that seemed woolly and turned out to actually be made of wool. I don't buy plastic sweaters! But it's getting harder and harder to find anything else.

He sure likes characterizing other peoples' speech as 'screeching' and I notice he's meticulous about identifying each South Asian person he interacted with so I guess all the folks whose race went unmentioned by him are the ones he thinks of as just 'people'. You know, the normal ones.
November 11, 2025 at 10:09 PM
You are so right! The phrase my guy once used (and it was super effective but he often forgets it in the moment) 'right now would you most like to be heard, held, or helped?'

Just asking the question helps me so much, to be honest.
November 11, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Okay, sounds like there's a reason that's one I've eaten! In my mind they're in the turnip/parsnip/rutabaga category and I don't love those veggies

Mashed turnips *sometimes* but the others nope with nope sauce
November 11, 2025 at 7:31 PM
I'm assuming you're sincere here, so I want to say gently that oblivious people are doing A LOT of damage right now, and also to observe that who gets offered belief ('he's oblivious') and who gets censure ('she's a scheming bitch!') is not random most of the time.

Have you tried flightaware? That's what I use to track my flights now. They'll tell you where the plane you're going to be on currently is, which is surprisingly useful for predicting on-time departure.
