Because it's going so well in Houston?

Yeah, I actually find workshop models more "skills" based because they focus on "strategies" that are agnostic on content (since everyone is reading something different.) Rather than focusing on the meaning of rich text, it ends up being about "identify the character trait" or "make a prediction."

Have you actually taken a deep dive into these programs? Do we not want kids reading rich literature, responding to text, reading, talking, and writing? Because that's what these programs - especially Fishtank and EL - are about.

If he takes questions, please someone ask him to explain the math here!

Yes, most teachers don't learn how to build curriculum in their training (some probably do), and you also need coherence across grades. Teachers typically don't have time for that.

Fishtank has a free version, and the paid version is much lower cost than most curricular materials. CKLA and EL are both freely-available.

Part of the science of reading is that students should build knowledge. SOR advocates for knowledge-rich curricula, like CKLA, Fishtank, and EL.

The right is never asked to be welcoming to others, to take the perspective of others, to be accountable for their rhetoric.

Not all published curricula are scripted. Many have relevant engaging books, deep questions, opportunities for research, etc.

There is research, however, that speaks to having a coherent and consistent curriculum- which doesn't happen when everyone does their own thing. It's also incredibly hard on new teachers.

There are lots of published curricula that align to the SOR and center whole books - EL, Fishtank, Bookworms all come to mind.
September 27, 2025 at 2:28 PM
What?!? It's absolutely aligned with the SOR - research indicates building knowledge impacts comprehension, and thenstic units and novels are both great ways to build knowledge. The old style themstic units that were more about crafts aren't great, but that's not what I'm talking about.
