I won't get tired saying this👉 #IUUfishing is not just about #fish. Its a convergence crime where other illicit activities, #HumanRights and labour abuses take place. In #SriLanka 's case its drug trafficking. Some good steps are being taken by the authorities. 1/2

Agree with #WWF's reaction to #EuropeanParliament's corporate due diligence vote. The scope limitation means even fewer companies will be addressing #humanrights & environmental abuses in their value chains. Sad #EPP has led the far right dictate the agenda. #IUU

🐟 New report from the EU IUU Fishing Coalition - EU import controls are likely failing to keep illegal seafood off European plates.

Many Member States are failing to properly check and control seafood imports, though required to do so under EU law.

Our new research reveals that EU import controls and poor implementation of EU law may be allowing illegal fishing products to enter the EU market. We examined EU Member States' implementation of the EU Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing Regulation between 2020 and 2023 It reveals that certain countries have consistently failed to carry out even the most basic checks on seafood imports. For example, in 2022 and 2023, Italy verified just one catch certificate each year. Portugal verified a minimum of two certificates every year between 2020-2023, refusing only two shipments.

Another @ec.europa.eu DG MARE mission, another round of official statements. Next month marks 8 years (!) since #Vietnam was yellow carded (warned) by the EU over failings to address #IUUfishing. Despite progress,persistent challenges remain,mainly over enforcement.

Fishing vessels are often used to facilitate illegal fishing, forced, bonded and slave labour, and the trafficking of people, drugs, and wildlife.

Individuals who ultimately profit from ship activities hide behind opaque ownership structures, shell corporations, and complex financial arrangements.
