@nytimes.com entering bold new frontiers of passive voice usage.
“The Department of Homeland Security has formally instituted a new requirement that members of Congress and their staff provide a week of notice before they visit immigration detention facilities, a policy that is at odds with a federal law that allows lawmakers to make unannounced oversight trips.“
ICE to require lawmakers to give a week’s notice before detention visits.

I genuinely cannot believe how many Democrats are spending their energy on destroying Mamdani when the GOP is trying to turn ICE into a full on secret police by drastically raising their budget

Assassinations and bombing plots against Democrats just aren’t as newsworthy as a Democrat proposing a pilot program of city-run grocery stores, sorry.
This is 100% true, just as the press spent ZERO time on the attempted mass assassination of the entirety of democratic leadership through pipe bombs just a few years ago. It’s literally never even discussed! A MAGA terrorist tried to kill all of the leading dems!
I can't tell if it's because I'm too NYC focused but does it feel like the news cycle spent more time crashing out on the fact that NYC picked a brown Muslim dude as is primary candidate then it did on a right wing extremist who shot 2 Minnesota legislators killing one, her husband and dog?

Just televising the construction of concentration camps now.

It's almost enough to make you think that the reason so many prominent Dems proudly & theatrically surrendered on immigration is that they secretly share the xenophobic impulses of right-wingers, but are ashamed of them, so they need a permission structure.
This is remarkable. New Quinnipiac poll finds support for path to legalization for most undocumented immigrants has risen to 64%. Only 31% want most of them deported.

That's a 14 point net swing for legalization since Trump took office.

On immigration generally, he's at 41-57!

Some people think this is an exaggeration but I will say that if I were HHS Secretary and my goal were to kill as many children as possible, it would be difficult to distinguish the actions I would take from those that Kennedy has taken.

So, these people are white supremacists of a very specific, American kind. The idea that the right to govern belongs only to a select, racially defined group was *the* political theory of the antebellum and redeemed south. Ask who is being replaced and why that’s a problem, you’ll see it.

something I kind of suspect is that Elon Musk pushed the Twitter algo to promote extreme views about Israel into people's feeds and so the many reporters who are still addicted to the site wound up grossly overestimating the salience this foreign policy issue had in fucking municipal elections.

it is genuinely incredible that zohran's campaign completely annihilated the democratic commentariat and party cadre mainstreaming of the idea that you need to concede palestine and trans rights to the zionists and republicans to 'gather votes'. lmfaoooo

The effort the dems are putting in to block Mamdani and get a sex pest elected instead is truly disgusting. Cuomo was a bad politician who killed people and wasted public funds and enriched his cronies but these people really will go to any length to tear down a brown democratic socialist.

To treat Zohran Mamdani as the kind of “dangerous” force that requires pulling out every dirty trick, agèd reprobate, and millions of dollars while handling Trump’s constitutional demolition derby with kid gloves is simply unforgivable.

An absolutely feckless and gutless party.

Whether it’s Trump’s goons arresting their own colleagues, the political assassination of their own fellow electeds, and now a blatantly illegal act of war, all Dem leadership can muster is "can we please get a briefing/answers?"

if it wasn’t already clear to you before, it should be clear to you now, that current dem leadership has opted into a strategy of waiting out trump’s term. maybe they get some power after the midterms but it’s clear where it will be wielded: to bargain and compromise, not in oversight.
Hakeem Jeffries: "The Trump administration bears the heavy burden of explaining to the American people why this military action was undertaken."
