A min dame a impresión de que iso de ir de cea era máis anglo, non? Películas americanas (de onde ven o propio concepto de "primeira cita") e logo vía UK, onde si que había unha certa peer pressure. Non é sorprendente que agora estas cousas se absorban na península.

I suppose yes but: a) it's longer-term (and universities aren't very good at thinking longer-term; b) a junior academic who will be cheaper in the initial years (although perhaps riskier) is a more attractive prospect.

I am also slightly dazzled at the assumption that academics who let themselves be poached are motivated by greed or prestige. Some of them would surely be - but there might be a host of other motivations, such as moving closer to family, escaping a toxic environment or being able to stay in a job.
October 30, 2025 at 12:08 PM
I am not convinced this is the case, though. A good REF result across a whole institution cannot be sustained solely through this. Whether universities would use poaching in very specific cases of a unit having few prospects - yes, I don't doubt it would happen. But probably not as the norm.

The explanation I've heard is that portability would disincentivise universities from investing in research culture, instead poaching academics with the highest potential of scoring well in REF at the last minute.
October 30, 2025 at 12:05 PM
People talk about large universities poaching researchers from smaller ones and the latter therefore getting nothing for their investment - but not about researchers using output portability to leave behind unsupportive or toxic contexts.

I do think output portability is one of very few tools researchers had against their employer (as your own case sadly demonstrates) - I therefore don't understand that its disappearance is alomst universally seen as a good thing among academics.
