State broadcasters are great because they can do unprofitable but significant work the private presses won't/can't do (but will very happily clip/quote and then profit on!) eg. boring but important brass tacks coverage (election night!) and long-term, costly investigations without broad interest.

The thing that will save BBC (News) is empowering it to be a critically thinking institution, which produces significant journalism.
