You know that there is a 1949 Italian comics adapting Dante’s Inferno with Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck? In addition to drawings and balloons, it has a long narration in terza rima

"Monty" is stealing your job of reinterpreting Dennis' menaceness and, suprisingly, going more political than you!

My unwoke position is that Lt. Flap was clearly built on stereotypes, but it was never hurtful and he had equal dignity with other characters, making Beetle Bailey a more successful case of integration than Peanuts. Then they toned down his attributes and used him less, making BB less diverse now

True, exceptionalism is flattering, comparison is humbling

Yes. And when I was at the university in the late 2000s, people of my generation romanticised the caves of Matera as a natural and organic way of living. Just a couple of generations after, they romanticised the misery their grandparents flew without looking back

It's not a representative sample, but reading the detective novels by Seishi Yokomizo published just after the war, a common refrain was "They lied to us, but fortunately we have changed". One novel is all about a soldier who discovers he is no longer supposed to kill himself and thank God for that!

As @zachweinersmith.bsky.social understood, the problem with AI is that is has not incentive to check whether the answers it delivers are true. Punishment is a good corrective!

There is only one picture of Beetle’s eyes and Mort Walker published it in one of his books. You could see Beetle’s eyes in college in the 1940s, it was fine to print in the 1980s, but it has to be redacted in the ARMY in 2025!? I blame woke

Wilson understood the role of the Labour Party to lead European socialism, which was part of his role in supporting Nenni in rejecting MLF and rejoining the Socialist International and in his bid to Europe, also seen as a counterweight to Gaullism

Interestingly that quotation shows the Europeanisation of the Labour Partt. It was originally coined by Morgan Phillips, in alliance with Scandinavian socialists in 1950, to reject Guy Mollet’s request to make Marxism a component of the definition of socialism for the Socialist International

of all those who did state a preference. The great majority of people don’t write a preference, so it supercharges the transfers to the Catholic Church, which has most of the explicit preferences. They got this system in the renegotiation of the Concordat, it also centralised the power of bishops

Ordinary people have contradictory feelings about state-funded big science, especially in space. It is better to work on them than to convince radical and consistent opponents
