What an utterly insane comment to make. I'd really like to stop this conflation that political/religious advocacy and "spiritual warfare" is anything similar to military service or active combat. It's weird.

While it’s totally possible that it was a “joke”, I think it’s entirely rationale to be extremely concerned.

Those "on our side" can be prevocational, meanspirited, or actually evil but we intentionally only look at the good they do/represent.
