I first played Cave Story in Jan 09, about 4 years after release. It kicked off my interest in indie games and more broadly my interest in art and media projects of all sizes, and their preservation. I love that the original version with the Aeon Genesis translation still exists today
December 20, 2004 saw the release of Doukutsu Monogatari, AKA Cave Story, a free game that was quickly translated into English and became the talk of the Internet. It's hard to estimate the impact it had on the indie scene and on the resurgence of 2D outside handheld consoles.
