I recently flew from Shanghai to Vancouver. As we were over the East China Sea between Shanghai and Nagasaki (just south of Jeju Island, I saw these incredible lights in the ocean. I was told these are floating fishing villages, but I cannot find any info online. So curious! Anyone know more?

Sad news about Jane Goodall. She was an inspiration to me growing up and I feel so fortunate that I was able to meet her when she received an honorary degree from SFU in 2018. She was truly a legend.

Question for fly folks - we talk about using Gal4 drivers at different temps to get more UAS-driven expression at higher and reduced at lower. In PMID: 12324939 Duffy states the following but give no reference for the statement (see pic). Is it just more active?

Just wanted to share a fabulous beetle I found on campus yesterday! I believe it is a ten-lined June beetle. I wonder which genes are dictating that gorgeous stripe pattern?!

Drosophila signalling folks - I am looking for the source for this table that has been taped up in my lab for quite a while. Any ideas?

Was driving through Manning Park (Coast Range in BC) and saw Doug Fir and Engelmann spruce trees with all new growth turned reddish brown, signs of white webs, and even saw a few bugs. Whole trees affected - what is this??

What do folks think of the new CIHR ranking bins (versus actual rank out of total submitted)? Doesn't seem very helpful to me, easpecially considering that fundable range is 100%-roughly 85% score. Thoughts?

@sfuscience.bsky.social does anyone know who manages the Koi in the AQ pond? There is a white fish that is being harassed by a big crowd of other ones and I'm afraid it's gonna die of exhaustion.
