I find that aesthetically pleasing design doesn’t please me that much anymore. In the word that doesn’t make much sense, in the word of content overabundance, the most beautiful thing is the one that makes much sense and takes up little space. #designcareer #manifesto

I’ve read Paula Scher's response to the critique of the latest @pentagram work and I think the discussion is missing an important angle here. Is it OK to train AI on the inputs you created thus avoiding plagiarism? 🧵1/4

Pentagram unapologetically defends using generative AI - Fast Company
Parts of the creative community erupted in outrage after partner Paula Scher and her team designed a government website using Midjourney.

Finished reading “Caps Lock”. Although it didn't seed a lot of optimism in me, it gave some support and a feeling of my sanity. As well as the recognition that my design career has been accompanied with an endless line of compromises. #designcareer

To overcome the despair at the current state of the design profession, started a list of companies that value true things more than hyped things. On the home page of @Procreate 's website, found this:. I knew right where to look) #designcareer

We need fewer things and less information. I'm not excited about brand refreshes, new design case studies, and 99% other design news. What we do creates too much noise. #designcareer #manifesto

Watching the @linkinpark revival show simultaneously gives me an ambivalent feeling of connection and disconnection with my youth. Nothing to do with the vocals, I think it's more about this characteristic millennium sound that needs 2000's context to sound true. #linkingpark

Trashed Midjourney generations while working on a single frame for the upcoming AI video. Painful trial and error and I'm happy it's almost done now. #midjourneyart #midjourney #midjourneyartwork #MJ #midjourney61 #midjourneyV6 #midjourneyV61 #AI #AIart #aivideo #aimovie

By the way, I think #RooseveltIsland is one of the most fascinating and magical places on Earth. I'm so grateful I had a chance to live there for a while and still have a chance to be there often. Here's a photo from my former hallway.

The “Fresh Styles for Web Designers” book says: “Notice how Karlsson’s harsher shapes and muted palette darken the mood of this site”. That’s the type of website analytics that we’ve lost! @y2k_aesthetic @WebDesignMuseum @CARI_Institute #Y2K #Y2Kaesthetics

I've always wanted to complement the music I create with texts and visuals. It's getting easier to handle everything on my own. Working now on the first AI music video for my @gustrecorder project with #midjourney and #LumaDreamMachine. Requires a lot of trial and error.

A lot of things design and tech are examples of pluralistic ignorance. Few like exhaustive jobs, motivational bs speeches, big corporations, fast changes and informational overload but a lot more seem to put up with it and crave to strive in it. #complaints #designcareer

Suggestion. What if in @midjourney , you couldn't apply a particular illustrator/photogapher/artist style for free. And each time you pay for using such a reference in a prompt, artists would get their royalty for it. #midjourney #ai #airegulation #aiethics

Designers get money to pay rent by producing artifacts that support the system that requires money for housing. Moreover, even those who suffer from it and find it bad, undermine the future of their successors. A vicious circle. #complaints #designcareer

Creating a perfect black-to-white color scale for a design system can be a lifetime opus magnum for a designer. A lot of theory, math, testing, and practice. And every decade of work leads to a small hue or brightness change ifor that black-500 or black-300

It's been always hard for me to define the people I look up to in terms of creativity and self-development. People I want to take for example. David Lynch is probably the single one I can name right away. Truly an ideal model of dedication to art.

David Lynch: The Art Life Official Trailer 1 (2017) - Documentary
Directed by: Jon Nguyen and Rick Barnes David Lynch: The Art Life Official Trailer 1 (2017) - Documentary David Lynch takes us on an intimate journey through the formative years of his life. From his idyllic upbringing in small town America to the dark streets of Philadelphia, we follow Lynch as he traces the events that have helped to shape one of cinema's most enigmatic directors. David Lynch the Art Life infuses Lynch's own art, music and early films, shining a light into the dark corners of his unique world, giving audiences a better understanding of the man and the artist. As Lynch states "I think every time you do something, like a painting or whatever, you go with ideas and sometimes the past can conjure those ideas and color them, even if they're new ideas, the past colors them." Kids in New York wear baggy cargo jeans. People say Gen Z is obsessed with the Frutiger Aero aesthetic. Shopify officially lets everyone consider beveled buttons trendy again. Looks like the UI design cycle (~10 years) is a little faster than the pop culture cycle (~20 years).

Caps Lock by Ruben Pater @unlisted_roots aside from being encyclopedically useful and engaging is just so beautifully designed and filled with plenty of carefully selected imagery. Awesome thing to own and read.

Design-related things I’m most interested in now:
1. Design ethics as a way to answer the question: why at all?
2. Utilitarian/rational design as the way to cut off the crap.
3. Emotional/unpredictable design as the way to overcome the authority of data-driven decisions.

There’s an evident intersection between architecture and visual design. Both create an environment but architecture does this more explicitly, imposes more obligations, and leads to more obvious consequences. We should take our work more seriously from this perspective.
