We need @matt-levine.bsky.social’s “certificate of dumb investment“, but for sports parlays
First you have to go to a local office of the Securities and Exchange Commission and ask for a certificate. 2. To get the certificate, you have to sign a one- page form that says, in large letters, that your investment is dumb and you will almost certainly get all of your money stolen and you can't complain when that happens. 3. Then an SEC employee "slaps you hard across the face and says 'really???' And if you reply 'yes really' then she gives you the certificate." 4. Then you give the certificate to the seller of the investment and you get to buy it. 5. "If an article ever appears in the Wall Street Journal in which you (or your lawyer) are quoted saying that you were just a simple dentist, didn't understand what you were buying and were swindled by the seller's flashy sales pitch, then you go to prison." This seems unlikely to become the law, but I still think it's a good idea.

This is the specific section I was referring to, and its true, those are all good things for anyone to aspire to, but addressing them specifically to young men might make them sink in a little deeper.
The good man of the reasonable center, in Galloway's view, adheres to a code indistinguishable from that of the Boy Scouts: mental and physical fitness, emotional resilience, hard work, financial prudence, caring for others. Few could object to any of this. But the person it describes—a kind and conscientious sort, who aspires to make a decent living and who looks after their loved ones-seems blessedly gender-free. So why make this about manhood? Even the Boy Scouts have gone coed.

While Al may or may not prove to be as consequential as the most dramatic technological developments of human history, it carries unique risks because of its close and genuine kinship to one distinctive way human beings interact with the world ("intelligence") and its ability to mimic (though probably not genuinely possess) other distinctive human characteristics including personality and purposefulness. Misunderstood or misapplied, Al may hold unique potential for the destructive triumph of pride, magic, and Mammon. These risks apply even if Al proves technically less capable than we may imagine, because the mere fantasy of creating "superhuman" capabilities, and of inventing alternatives to human beings, is sufficient to distort relationships, economies, and societies.

The Inflation Reduction Act's Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grants, which were meant to support the conversion of shuttered or at- risk auto plants to be able to manufacture electric vehicles and their supply chains, would be fully obliterated based on the new list. All 13 grants that were awarded under the program are there, including $80 million for Blue Bird's new electric school bus plant in Fort Valley, Georgia, $500 million for General Motors' Grant River Assembly Plant in Lansing, Michigan, and $285 million for Mercedes-Benz's next-generation electric van plant in Ladson, South Carolina.
