#Zillathon2025 Gaiden: Varan (1958)
This listless, dull-witted production was intended for TV, and it shows. The effects aren't up to par, our favourite actors are barely in it, and the plot is a mind-numbing connect-the-dots slog. The only one bringing their A-game is composer Akira Ifukube!

Creature With the Atom Brain (1955)

A surprisingly benign ex-nazi scientist is forced to create atomic powered zombies by a mobster set on revenging himself on the people who had him arrested and deported.
Kind of fun.

On Looking. Alexandra Horowitz, 2013
Cognitive scientist, Horowitz, takes a walk round the block. Then takes 11 more with a series of "experts" to get an idea of what each one of us is missing when we look around a familiar landscape

I read a book. It's my favourite

Cold Comfort Farm. Stella Gibbons, 1932
The author skillfully satirises popular culture of the early 30s, especially the popular rural bodice rippers of the time.
I saw something nasty in the woodshed...

The Watcher in the Woods (1981)

Thirty years ago, a teenage girl vanishes during an initiation ceremony. Now, someone or something is haunting the woods.

Disney film panned by the critics when it came out. I still got the chills, though, even if it's not the best film ever.

I read a book. It was mostly good

Tit's Up. Sarah Thornton, 2024
The first 3 sections were bold & informative. The 4th didn't seem to say much, & the 5th was disappointing.
Also found the book too USA centric, the US having its own brand of weird misogyny & hang-ups

#Zillathon2025 Gaiden: The Mysterians (1957)
Toho blend corny 50s sci-fi charm with their signature tokusatsu craft. The result is an action-packed spectacle, but the story (and monster) leave something to be desired. It's a bit silly, but not an unenjoyable watch if you're in the mood for it.

Hummingbird Salamander. Jeff Vandemeer (2021)

#Zillathon2025 Gaiden: Rodan (1956)
Toho spread their wings (ha) with a brand-new monster. Rodan is a great addition to the lineup, but unfortunately his film suffers from rather uneven pacing. After a strong opener, it's a long wait until the action-packed finale and surprisingly emotional ending.
