#BLM OTD 1955 the Montgomery Bus boycott began, setting the stage for public transportation desegregation. The protest began 4 days after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man & was arrested & fined. The boycott, led by MLK, Jr. lasted 381 days.

#BLM OTD 1969 civil rights leader Fred Hampton, a leader of the Black Panthers, was shot & killed during a police raid in Chicago causing public outrage. Ensuing investigations scrutinized the FBIs attempts to dismantle the Panthers & other Black organizations.

#BLM OTD 1859 abolitionist John Brown was hanged in Charles Town, VA for raiding the federal armory at Harpers Ferry. The raid tried to seize weapons & initiate a slave uprising & liberation movement. It failed & led to Brown's capture & execution for treason.

#BLM OTD 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, AL bus & was arrested. Her stand sparked a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system & led to a 1956 SCOTUS decision banning segregation on public transportation.

#BLM OTD 1883 Sojourner Truth, abolitionist, women's rights activist died in MI at 86. She is known for her "Ain't I a Woman?" speech & was the 1st Black woman to win a court case vs a white man to recover her son from slavery. 11/26: Sojourner Truth Day in NY.

#BLM OTD 1955 The Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) banned racial segregation on buses & in waiting rooms involved in interstate travel. The decision overturned the "Jim Crow" regulations that private bus companies had imposed on Black interstate travelers.

The “First Lady of Song,” Fitzgerald was a jazz singer with remarkable vocal talents. She won 13 Grammys & in 1967 received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

#BLM OTD 1906 dozens of Black vets wrongfully discharged from the 25th Infantry Regiment, a segregated unit stationed at Fort Brown, TX, went to San Antonio seeking work. White employers citywide refused to hire them in an attempt to drive them out of town.

#BLM OTD 1983 officers acting under Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge beat James Cody, a Black man, with a flashlight, electric shocked him & threatened to castrate him. For 30 yrs Burge oversaw the torture of 100+ Black men, causing many forced confessions.

#BLM OTD 1960 4 federal marshals escorted 6 yr old Ruby Bridges to her 1st day of 1sr grade as the 1st Black student to attend previously all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. A riotous white mob screamed slurs and threats as she arrived.

#BLM OTD 1956 SCOTUS rules Alabama bus segregation unconstitutional. The ruling was a win for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, in which African-Americans didn't ride buses for over a year to protest Rosa Parks' arrest for not giving her seat to a white man in 1955.

#BLM OTD 1935 two Black teenagers, Ernest Collins (15) and Benny Mitchell (16), were lynched by a mob of 700 people in Colorado County, Texas. The lynching was a public spectacle following a false accusation of murder, and no one was punished for the crime.

#BLM OTD 1831 Nat Turner was executed. Turner, an enslaved Baptist minister who believed he was chosen by God to lead his people out of slavery, was hanged for leading a rebellion that killed about 60 white people in August 1831.
