Thinking games work so well on those days before a big break! 7th graders played the factor/multiple version of 24. 8th graders played versions of Racetrack as described in Ben Orlin's Math Games with Bad Drawings. We are in our linear relationship unit so some slope fun was fitting. #ITeachMath

So grateful for the dream team and all our participants and supporters! I can't wait for the next round with Steve Johnson and @adameschborn.com Thank you AMTNYS for the platform to share. #ITeachMath #FindingJoyInMath #AMTNYS2025

Happy Halloween 🎃 sharing my intro to linear relationships story time with my 8th graders. Made the orange circle the "pumpkin". Students don't yet know how to write non-proportional equations and were able to figure out how that +1 pumpkin circle would affect the table and equations. #ITeachMath

Favorite addition to celebrate students for studying and trying to really master our content! I have students that earn 85% or better take a photo (with or without glasses) that I then email to their families. Kids find it silly, families love the positive contact!

If you have never tried a Formative Assessment Lesson from the Mathematics Assessment Project, here's your invitation!! The time is worth it! These are some of my 8th graders working with transformations. www.map.mathshell.org/lessons.php

#FindingJoyMSMath I had a student leave 'egyptian hieroglyphics' on my board...hint was the first character is "s" 😂

One of my favorite warm-ups of the year! 7th graders have sorting challenges (I describe attributes) and 8th graders will use the manipulatives to solve systems of equations. #iteachmath #findingjoyinmiddleschoolmath #mathsky

Problem Solving through Games and Puzzles loosely based on Ben Orlin's Math Games with Bad Drawings. Inaugural Spring Conference of Buffalo Area Association of Math Teachers. Another fun presentation with @adameschborn.com! #BAAMT #mathsky #findingjoy #iteachmath

Capture the Flag with an unfair twist today in order to keep my students powering through review questions. Great conversations, and I feel the students were really helping each other grow in understanding. #iteachmath #mathsky #findingjoyinmiddleschoolmath

8th grade state science test today so I volunteered to take all the 7th graders for 3 periods of review games and shenanigans. They were all engaged and so many actually thanked me for my ridiculous antics on the way out ❤️ #findingjoyinmiddleschool #iteachmath #mathjoy

Probability should be fun! Race to the top dice sums, predictions vs experimental data. Good energy in the room on the day before break even though we were still covering the curriculum! #iteachmath #findingjoy #mathsky

We have been working on determining the area and then side length of a tilted square in order to discover the Pythagorean Theorem. I had a kid beat me to the big reveal!! The student in blue was verifying the idea and named it "C's way". I can't wait for tomorrow. #iteachmath #findingjoy

Great way to begin my day! @kurt-salisbury.bsky.social my 7th graders loved your Punch Out challenges in Desmos Classroom, one stating "defeating Mike Tyson helped me really know mean, median and range!"

Finding Joy in Middle school math: I'm pretty sure I was the only teacher in the building on a Friday afternoon with 10 students staying BY CHOICE after school. Breakout club for some, math questions for others; kids that run in different circles working together to solve problems.

I like the number snake. Referencing your other post about Beast Academy curriculum, I'm incredibly impressed that they use that format beginning with their 1A level instead of linear fill in the blank practice.

Finding Joy in Middle School Math: understanding lines of best fit and outliers though @desmos.com 8th grade Dapper Cats lesson. My own children wanted to try my fun lesson. My 8th graders had fun and are confident with predictions through the line of best fit.

Finding Joy in Middle School Math: the joy of pulling away from endless state test practice workbooks! Presenting questions, talking about common mistakes, supporting each other's thinking, and celebrating "how easy this is" after months of powerful thinking!

Finding Joy in MS Math: click battle @desmos.com to pull them into the lesson, then space and pacing created so the students can organize the data as they see best. My only group that graphed today went further to point out the data was non- linear and not a function. Great class discussion!

Finding Joy in MS Math: new challenge for my 8th graders following their volume unit; What amount of space is empty in the cheese ball container?

Finding Joy in MS Math: 8th grade students enthusiastically sculpt models of 3D shapes to test if they can slice it fairly thus proving if it follows V=(base shape area)(height) formula. Hands on experience means we aren't tricked with rotation.

Finding Joy in MS Math: when @desmos.com provides the self-checking opportunity that invites my students to take on the challenge of combining 9 expressions all at once! Built-in student agency, some students only combined pairs or groups of 3 at a time. #mathteacher #mtbos
