Of course, we speculated about the role abortion would play in 2024. The exits showed about 14% of voters cited abortion as their "most important issue", which is on par with the proportion of “abortion-focused” Americans uncovered in our analysis of prior presidential elections.

The 2022 Dobbs decision had a big impact on issue salience and played a role in mobilizing voters in the midterm elections later that year. We used some data from the 2022 ANES pilot to flesh this out a bit.

We explored the connection between preference intensity and a few indicators of polarization. Americans with intense preferences held more absolutist positions on abortion rights. They were more affectively polarized, and they participated more in politics.

A team of research assistants coded these abortion mentions to uncover common themes. Democrats were more likely to mention women’s rights, Republicans were more likely to mention ideology.

We used spontaneous mentions of abortion in the ANES party likes and dislikes questions to measure preference intensity. Here are some examples. Notably, most people mentioned abortion alongside other issues, contrary to the notion of "single-issue" abortion voters.
