Learning that the great Turkish political scientist Taha Parla has passed. He was the first to really theorize Kemalism as a corporatist ideology. His book, /Corporatist Ideology in Kemalist Turkey: Progress or Order?/ Co-authored with Andrew Davison, was absolutely foundational for my own work.

Universities are assembling larger and larger teams to deal with academic integrity issues--mostly focused on AI--while simultaneously holding AI "writing" contests, AI-themed events, "hey, come play with these fun tools!" The messages are so mixed, it's criminal. Because AI is bloated with money.

Again, this is an existential crisis for the entire financial & academic model of 🇺🇸 public universities, but the public doesn’t understand this, in part because our leaders have been on this issue. It’s maddening:

Reports of the death of the bachelor’s degree have been greatly exaggerated. Enrollment is near pre-pandemic levels, real tuition is flat or down, and the college wage premium remains high.

I explore how the narrative became disconnected from the data.

It is a pet peeve of mine, but adding "neo-Ottoman" to a headline or book title is almost always just giving a thin coat of bullshit patina to one's argument.

There are times when the term has analytical heft. Those times are pretty infrequent.

Today marked the 1166th vigil. Demonstrators are protesting a government-imposed rector, curbs on academic freedom, and the targeting of students and faculty.

AFAIK Weiss had a very successful undergraduate career in which she wasn’t silenced (and in fact was involved in campaigning against specific professors) so this is an excellent take
The new editor of CBS News looked at political violence in America, and confidently identified the "biggest culprits": the universities.
This is the perspective that Weiss is being hired to bring to a hard news outlet.
