Interviewer: give us an example of a time you were proactive.

A: Once when I was collecting the bodies of the dead, one guy we were collecting said, 'I'm not dead yet.' So without hesitating, I picked up a board and whacked 'im good on the head. I took decisive action to keep the process going.

who's like this: sometimes you reply to an email in your mind and then forget that you actually haven't replied to it in reality 😳

Fun fact:

During Trump's first run, several groups ran polls that asked the question:

"When was America Great?"

The overwhelming choice was the 1950's.

The overwhelming reason was "economic prosperity"

...

Do you notice a pattern in the tax rate on the wealthiest in the 1950's?

Today’s #LunchBreakPhotography. Wumu gate, generally known as the junior South Gate, is located ~1 mile west of the South Gate. It used to be a morning market commonly patronized by local residents, yet it has evolved into a tourism hot spot in recent years. Love seeing all the hustle and bustle!

Since I’ve picked up my camera again, I’ll try to get out there and capture something during every lunch break. These will largely be random moments that have stirred something in me- moments that I hope to catch and keep. So, here goes the first of many (hopefully) #LunchBreakPhotography posts!

On a lighter Hong Kong note (because goodness knows we need some levity at this point):

- I have a friend named Wilson -- because he likes hiking and he grew up near the Wilson Trail 😅
- I'll never forget the realisation dawning on me when I asked on the phone to talk to a woman named Sine Ma... 🤣
That moment when you meet a Hong Konger who has named themselves Piccolo and you have to figure out whether they're super into Dragon Ball Z or Music.

Authoritarianism needs the death of academic institutions because it needs the death of free discourse. And in a lot of places in the world, including where I’m from, they *did* destroy it with awful consequences. Here too it’s been a steady progression of turning universities into hedge funds.

It’s almost time. I’ll be offering a virtual lecture and conversation hosted by Perkins School of Theology’s Black Church Studies program, digging into why Anabaptism and the Black Church have something important to offer in this moment.

Join December 4th at 7pm CT/ 8pm ET. Hope to see you on Zoom.

You know what's not AI? Community theater. It's actual people coming together and building and creating and sharing. If you are doing okay, maybe you could send a dollar or two our way. 😊

"I just spent all morning in a XJP thought study session and now I really just want to get drunk and cry in my baijiu."
It would be interesting to talk to some government officials and party members, who were usually the most negative about the direction of things in the past.

My infantry Bn had a really hard time parsing the gender and sexuality issues of Southern Helmand.

When people say, "you wouldn't want a 'purple haired gender studies major' in the Marines" I reply "YES we desperately needed them!" We had teams of anthropologists who published studies for us.

The first- and second-hand accounts I am hearing from China from Chinese people are quite universally negative: things are getting worse.

I have no doubt that some things have improved in the years since I have left--better cars, better restaurant service--but the economy is worse.
