But Hess is one of my faves! He did a great series of folk-hero covers for Boy's Life that I think you'd like, if you haven't seen them. He also did a beautiful adaptation of Disney's Babes in Toyland for a Golden Book, and these amazing pop-up cards. Fantastic illustrator under everyone's radar.

Hey, I've got a couple that aren't among the most frequently recommended: CRISS-CROSS with today's birthday boy Burt Lancaster, but more importantly, Yvonne DeCarlo. Directed by Siodmak who also directed THE KILLERS, though I just realized you said THE KILLING, so let me recommend The Killers too.
