You thought you knew what the Second Law of thermodynamics is? So did I. Researching this piece for @quantamagazine.bsky.social made me realise that I knew only the classical approximation to it. 🤯

Completely coincidental that @quantamagazine.bsky.social just published a nice article by @shalmawegs.bsky.social on the history of Fourier transforms! I did not know that Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier was slated to be guillotined. Narrow escape there.

This is such a good writeup. Thanks @startswithabang.bsky.social . We're living in exciting times as so much more data will come in and we'll go soon from having more theories than data to having more data than theories I hope....
Is dark energy no longer a cosmological constant?

#AskEthan

With CMB, supernova, and large-scale structure data all combined, a "vanilla" ΛCDM cosmology doesn't look right anymore.

Many favor evolving dark energy, but is that the right answer?

Ask Ethan: Is dark energy no longer a cosmological constant?
The Universe isn't just expanding; the expansion is accelerating. If different methods yield incompatible results, is dark energy evolving?

Move the World Cup back to Qatar again! Overall more inviting (120F temps and all) than US in the New ICE Age.

But better idea: Move all the games to already planned co-hosts Mexico and Canada. Less random fear for visitors from the rest of the world.
DHS confirmed that ICE and CBP agents will be on site “for security” at the start of the FIFA Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. ICE also reminded non-U.S. citizens to carry proof of legal status while attending the event.
