“The abortion policy, in theory, is supposed to protect life, and in my case it did the opposite,” Nakagawa said. “It almost led to my children not having a mother.”
The morning that Cmdr. Elizabeth Nakagawa was scheduled to have a D&C to remove fetal tissue after losing a very wanted pregnancy, she learned the surgery had been canceled because the military’s health insurance plan refused to pay for it.

A Coast Guard Commander Miscarried. She Nearly Died After Being Denied Care.
U.S. service members have long faced strict limits on abortions, even when used to resolve miscarriages. Under federal law, the military will only pay for abortions in cases of rape, incest or to…

In my piece about Conclave: “In a key scene, Sister Agnes has to remind the churchmen that God also gave women eyes and ears. Though these aren’t currently the body parts that make one eligible for ordination in the church, perhaps change will come eventually.”

Really important conference held at USD. I’m especially grateful for the leadership of Victor Carmona. Ecclesia in America brings together theologians and practitioners from the Americas for bridge building and mutual accountability.
Cardinal Michael Czerny: Don't be afraid to walk with migrants
At an event focused on synodality in America, Jesuit Cardinal Michael Czerny emphasized that the massive deportation of undocumented migrants would be incompatible with Catholic doctrine.

We can’t say this enough: When people in Trump‘s orbit deliberately lie about how our constitutional democracy works, they violate the oaths they take to uphold the law. & they violate the trust the American people place in them.

Cruelty this truly is, with no other apparent motive than to demean others and to save what amounts to a paltry sum in federal spending. For those of us in the Catholic community, cruelty should be especially alarming. And a call to action.
Editorial: Silence in the face of Trump's cruelty is complicity
It is time to name the result of this chaos — unbounded cruelty. Complicit Catholics, in particular, must stop aiding and abetting cruelty by asserting that this administration is in any way pro-life....
