It was a delight to catch a glimpse of Khalil in the throes of laughter. He laughed as though each laugh were a physical vessel urgently exiting his body, or a secret he'd held for so long that it had forced its way out. Khalil's body jerked forward when he laughed-his laughter was more of a kinetic event than a sonic one. He rocked, he shook slightly, and he smiled wide. One seat over, Mamdani laughed, too, with a bit more volume; his laughter seemed to arrive less like a long-held secret than like an idea that he couldn't wait to share. Most of the audience didn't know that the two men were in the room, and because of this most of the audience missed out on the small miracle of watching them share their joy at the scene before them.

As the Governor of Utah, hardly a woke scold, said when he vetoed a trans kids in sports bill, “Rarely has so much fear & anger been directed at so few.”

Allowing our smallest most vulnerable population to be scapegoated as a wedge issue towards full fascism is now added to our list of sins.
Four kids and only one of them playing girls sports. That’s what all of this is about. Four kids who aren’t dominating or winning trophies or taking scholarships. Four kids who are just trying to find some friends and feel like they are a part of something. Four kids trying to get through each day. Rarely has so much fear and anger been directed at so few. I don’t understand what they are going through or why they feel the way they do. But I want them to live. And all the research shows that even a little acceptance and connection can reduce suicidality significantly. For that reason, as much as any other, I have taken this action in the hope that we can continue to work together and find a better way.

Look the ICE agent right in the face, cell phone in hand and say, "Identify yourself as a real officer." Then you say, "Name & Call Sign" because they are playing dumb (ICE agents don't have badge or serial numbers). Start dialing emergency services. If they refuse two times you call 911 and say, "There is a man here impersonating a cop and he has a gun."

OTOH all this is bringing home the degree to which all the outfits my mother has sewn over the decades for herself & us are a key if small aspect of fashion history
My mum in her prom dress, a simple but chic bateau neck long sleeved black maxi sheath My brother, sister, & me in red velvet lederhosen & dirndls my mother designed, sewed, & embroidered She was into matching outfits for everyone, which became more extreme as the family grew. Me, my brother, & sister giving clumsy salutes in matching navy sailor suits my mother made for Easter My sister Charity in another dirndl design years after the red velvet she wore as a baby. There were multiple pieces & a lot of skirt layers for twirling. Charity’s outfit was peach-themed. Think I had a blue version? Marja was lavender & Esther’s pink. I think. We loved these dresses & wore them until they fell apart.

My mother’s response (has been sewing since the 50s)
A text from my mum follows a gif of a McCall’s pattern illustration dancing in a yellow checked suit & reads: I certainly should have sufficient patterns to last my lifetime, but the ability to go on my own and browse and select and purchase with my own funds a pattern to create my own clothes is one of my earliest memories of independence.  Of course, the pattern only cost a dime back then, and I could ride on my bike to the little grocery at Rockford, which of course sold fabric and patterns.  Even when we moved to Palos Verdes, I could have done the same, although not for a dime, and usually accompanied by small people.

2) Ultraviolence, the entire album, lived under my skin. Listened to it all day, every day for a WHILE. Was so fucking proud of her. If you were a kid still when Born to Die came out you probably don't remember the degree to which the entire internet turned on her.
