Going wherever my curiosity leads me.
Congrats! I loved your first book. Why did it take the second book to find out you can curl your tongue?

NOAA announced in 2024 it would upgrade the Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) system. Any idea if those upgrades where done? What effect does the budget cuts, firings, early retirement have on US ability to monitor and predict tsunami?

Saw a presentation from software developers about using AI for coding. Many said that beginner developers should not using AI to learn how to code because they need to learn the basics instead of copying whatever AI tells them.

It elicits different range of responses. I went there once since, never going again, would not recommend it to others. Talk to two people last week who also disliked it.

Can't completely blame Wharton. Professor William T Kelly told people that “Donald Trump was the dumbest goddam student I ever had.”

If Police gets your DNA, they can track you, all your current relatives, and all future descendants. I advertiser gets your DNA, you will get targeted ads based on your physical characteristics and health. If genetics company gets your DNA, they can create synthetic copies of your genes.

I also noticed a change in her videos. In April 2024 she posted a video where she announced she had left academic research system and will focus on scicomm on YouTube. If your income depends mainly on YT views and sponsors, then that will affect the content - this is common issue for YT creators.

If scientists want the general public to care about the firings, scientists need to explain what effect these firings will have on lives of everyday people who don't have a science career.

I hope you can use your youtube channel to inform people about the cuts to science and medicine, and the long term implications of those cuts. There are a lot of people who don't know what is going on.

Gutting NOAA and climate change research also makes the airline industry less safe. Many plane accidents are caused by bad weather. Slashing agencies that make weather alerts and look at long term climate patterns is bad for airline safety.

Thanks for the reply. In order to make the general public care about the cuts, it needs to be clearly communicated what effects the cuts will have on people's everyday lives. If people can't accurate earthquake alerts, that endangers a lot of people.

Does that include earthquake alerts?

Alzheimer's 5K projects, loss of $660 million. ALS 400 projects, loss of $51 million. Dementia 4000 projects, loss of $490 million. The loss amounts are rough estimate if the project had 15% cap was imposed when the project was funded.

RePORTER has a PROJECT_TERMS field which allows people to search the records by keywords. I did a rough analysis of US projects. In 2024, 13K projects with PROJECT_TERMS "cancer" with $6 billion in funding. If you apply 15% cap, that's a loss of a $1 billion over the lifetime of those projects.

Did you look at the information from NIH RePORTER? RePORTER has a list of active NIH projects. NIH funded 64K projects and had 79K active projects in the US in 2024. Some ongoing projects started in the 1970s. reporter.nih.gov/exporter

Talk to the rest of the group to let them know what is going. Also call your Congressperson. AOC said that the increase in calls is making some them pay attention. Rare disorders have to be government funded because private sector isn't going to pay $$$ to find treatment for so few people.

I read people posts that the cuts will hurt hospitals and medical schools. I did a quick calculation and $3.8 billion will be lost for hospitals and medical schools. Do you think adding a table for that topic will help people see the everyday in impact of the cuts?
February 10, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Thanks for doing all the work. Do you need to exclude awards with no direct costs? I think it would be good to show all the projects that the NIH funds. Should Adjusted Funding formula be changed? If old indirect rate is < 15% leave as is, else use the formula you provided.
February 10, 2025 at 4:39 PM
On Friday, they announced big cuts to all existing and future NIH funded projects. Lots of NIH programs will need to reduce costs by laying off people and reducing or stopping services. The amount cut will vary from program to program.
