Not a surprise sadly. Recall Trump was gonna can Bridenstine because he committed the unforgivable sin of not bashing Obama enough and spent more time actually doing his job than stroking Trump's ego.

As to why the Hasmoneans aren't really mentioned (outside of the disputed canonicity of the Maccabees) I don't truly know. A lot of history, even in the immediate area of the Levant, is not mentioned in Scripture.

I also grew up with Ch. 11 being seen as end times related. Then like you I noticed the neat fit to the conflicts between the Ptolamies and the Seleucids.
I don't think Ch. 12 is refering to the Hasmoneans. Vs. 1-3 especially don't give the impression (at least in English) that deliverance is....

I think there is a difference between news as entertainment and using entertainment to explore ideas.
Science fiction for example is a great medium to explore morality and philosophical quandries.
But when news becomes a battle to create the most entertaining/anxiety inducing story so people....
