As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor Dr. King's enduring vision by cultivating moral courage and compassionate leadership in the pursuit of justice. Each of us must use our voice -- be heard -- as we face injustice.

Repeating Benjamin Franklin’s claim that the greatest rogues were the richest rogues, a colleague added, Scripture requires that rulers hate covetousness. As citizens we should be wary of those in authority who covet power and money. They begin by taking it from the weakest. They never stop there.

From our faculty: In this month of honoring MLK, Jr and marking the Presidential transition…
What values hold true for you? Inform your thinking?
And how do we acknowledge that others hold differing views and values?
Can we commit to civil discourse and action? What does that require of us?

Our event for this evening is cancelled. Unfortunately, the Dekalb County State of Emergency remains in effect and Emory University is not open for normal operations today. We hope to reschedule this event for a later date.

It is with great gratitude & humility that CFE pauses to honor the late President Jimmy Carter, an individual who represented the highest standards of ethics & service. As VP Mondale stated “We told the truth. We obeyed the law. We kept the peace.” May his memory and life be a legacy for the future.

@carlelliott.bsky.social to speak at the Center on Jan. 15. His book is an intellectual inquiry into the moral struggle that whistleblowers face, and why it's not the kind of struggle that most people imagine. For more information: bit.ly/3OZfCTy

Follow @rahallclifford.bsky.social as she works with the Task Force for Global Health's Focus Area on Compassion and Ethics in Global Health during her sabbatical year. We are a proud supporter of her work and are privileged to have her as an Emory Center for Ethics Faculty Fellow.
I'm grateful to be embarking on a year of sabbatical! I'll be joining the team @taskforce.bsky.social Focus Area on Compassion and Ethics in Global Health to learn and support efforts to build a more equitable global health. I'll also be thinking about scalability of co-design codesign.emory.edu

Are there baseline, moral expectations for civic leaders as they exercise their offices? We have in mind moral excellences such as honesty or integrity (as opposed to hypocrisy). We care because behavior falling below the baseline weakens social ties and provides the young with negative role models.
