If Trump and other autocrats are to be defeated, it will be by bold, bright, anti-establishment candidates, who speak for those who struggle with enormous rents, failing public services, lousy pay and insecure, unsatisfying jobs, rather than for those inflicting these miseries.

So please join me for Coinstar Day. Let’s stand against research cuts and for people with a disease that has never gotten the recognition it deserves. 9/9

I dedicate Coinstar Day to ME/CFS research as someone who has asthma and celiac disease and has been successfully treated for thyroid cancer. Research has given me my quality of life, and can for ME/CFS patients too—but only if it’s advocated for specifically. @standupforscience.bsky.social 8/9

Activists rightly protest scientific research cuts. But of all the diseases I see advocated for, I never see ME/CFS outside circles of people who have it (and are often too sick to protest). ME/CFS research has long been neglected and deserves to be uplifted alongside all medical research. 7/9

The government and Columbia may have reached a settlement, but anyone in research can tell you that the restoration of canceled funds alone cannot reverse the time lost to the initial cancelation. That’s why we still must stand with researchers who lost their funds. 6/9

This November 9, the 9th Semiannual Coinstar Day, is dedicated to Ian Lipkin’s ME/CFS research at Columbia, which suffered from the Trump administration’s revocation of federal funds this year. 5/9

And thus Coinstar Day was born. Every November 9 and May 9 since, I have gathered all my coins from the previous 6 months and donated them. Every Coinstar Day since May 2023 has been to benefit #MECFS and #longCovid research nonprofits. 4/9

But that November 9, I decided I wouldn’t wait for the next tragedy, but would instead take the coins to the Coinstar that night and donate to charity right then. 3/9

I remembered collecting coins for fundraisers, my parents helping me clean out their cars and taking me to the Coinstar machine to cash them out. It was always more money than I would have guessed. I had a stash of coins in my room awaiting the next tragedy that would need them. 2/9

That’s why this Coinstar Day, I’m supporting Lipkin’s research. If you want to stand against this administration and for people who have been abandoned, I encourage you to join me.

Lipkin’s lab at Columbia was one of very few federally funded ME/CFS research labs. ME/CFS receives less federal funding per patient than any other disease. Not only did they get caught in the government’s attack on Columbia, what they study is too neglected to be a priority to fight for. (cont.)

@50501movement.bsky.social @indivisible.org @womensmarch.com ME/CFS/LC patients are some of the most negatively affected by all this administration’s decisions. Let’s talk about these diseases and loudly include them in our resistance efforts.

Opposed to racial inequality? Stand with ME/CFS/LC patients.
Opposed to scientific research cuts? Stand with ME/CFS/LC patients.
Opposed to voter suppression? Stand with ME/CFS/LC patients.
Every feminist should know that these diseases predominantly affect women and are dismissed as hysteria.
