Commemorative days like World AIDS Day are more than symbolism — they keep HIV/AIDS on the radar for the public, policymakers, and funders when it might otherwise fade from consciousness. Without that, it’s easier for HIV to slip down the federal agenda.

We win this battle, and keep our neighbors healthy, by continuing to recognize the need for public education, ending stigma and investing in life-saving research.

Today, on World AIDS Day, we remember the millions lost to AIDS-related illness — globally and right here in Michigan. Despite remarkable progress, HIV remains a public-health reality.

We are a close to ending new HIV cases by 2030.
