Our jury system is sortition-based: All citizens serve. People take it seriously. Corruption is rare.

Sortition-based citizens assemblies are happening all over the world. They work. Unlike the faux populism of MAGA, they actually empower everyday people. /7

Hallam's alternative is a democratic revolution. Step one: forget about elections. The ancient Athenians knew that elections favored the rich and powerful. Their democracy was based on representatives selected by lottery, known as sortition. /6

Revolution is a scary word for many Americans, but as Hallam points out, it simply means changing the government to better suit the moment. Representative democracy was built for an earlier time, when we didn't face global extinction. We need to replace it. /4
