These are, indeed, unprecedented times. Author Emilie-Noelle Provost has challenged herself to document the times through her fiction, today at WU.
Unprecedented Times: Why We Need to Write Fiction Now
I was a history major in college. In addition to textbooks and primary sources, novels were assigned reading in most of my classes. I’ve read The Iliad more times than anyone else I know and can st…

Have you ever heard the Portuguese word "saudade?" My October Living Madly column is about words in other languages that don't have equivalents in English. It wouldn't be a bad idea for English to adopt a few of them. #language #words #writing

Writers: Have you ever looked through a Word doc you've been working on and discovered text you know you didn't write? I'm editing something and there are phrases that have been changed. I checked the memory stick I use as a backup to make sure. It's creeping me out. @writingcommunity.bsky.social

Anyone who’s ever taken a writing class knows that good writing cannot be created without taking some sort of risk. It’s a maxim that holds true for just about every form of art. If you only presen…

My bi-monthly post @writerunboxed.bsky.social, up today, is about the reasons I write, especially when doing so doesn't always make a lot of sense to other people. #writing #fiction #amwriting #whywrite
Writing fiction is rarely the path to maximizing one’s economic viability. In light of the fact, Author Emilie-Noelle Provost was recently asked why she chose to do so. She dug deep for answers and passes the question to us, today at WU.
Why Write Fiction?
I’m used to being asked where I get story ideas or what my writing process is like. I can reply to these questions easily because I know the answers. But I was thrown off recently when a friend of …

Question for fiction writers: When using words from a foreign language (in my case, French) I feel I need to use an accent mark when a word's pronunciation isn't obvious (rose/rosé). But do I then need to include accents for every French word I use to in order to be consistent? #writing #ficiton

My bi-monthly post @writerunboxed.bsky.social is all about books, how they're viewed, the way they're made, and how we might be able to strengthen the power of the printed word. #books #reading #craft
“[A] growing number of people are embracing artisanal products…I wonder whether producing titles with the type of workmanship & artistry that was once the norm might help bring people who love books, reading, & writing closer together…” Author Emilie-Noelle Provost poses a worthy query, today at WU.
Could More Thoughtfully Crafted Books Change Our Relationship with Reading?
Books have been getting a lot of bad press lately. According to Penn America’s website, pen.org, more than 16,000 book bans have been implemented in U.S. public schools since 2021, 4,000 of which o…

I'm disappointed to learn of the passing of David Lynch. He directed one of my favorite movies, Wild at Heart, released in August 1990. It's still the only film I've ever paid to see in a theater twice. I wrote a post about the film back in 2022. #DavidLynch
