I'm riding Taiwan's High Speed Rail to Hsinchu to sign a lease. The journey is about 90km and takes 32 minutes including 6 minutes of stopping time at intermediary stations.

7.10 Resolution of No Confidence WHEREAS, the UVA Board of Visitors’ “Statement of Visitor Responsibilities” asserts that “Visitors actively safeguard principles of academic freedom for the University and its faculty and endeavor to protect the University from outside influences seeking improperly to shape it”; and WHEREAS, during their July 9, 2025, meeting with Faculty Senate Executive Council, the Rector and Vice Rector refused to commit to resisting current or future efforts by federal or state entities to influence or be involved in the naming of the interim and/or 10th President; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Faculty Senate of the University of Virginia has lost confidence in the ability of the Rector, Vice Rector, and Board of Visitors to manage or direct personnel decisions pertaining to University administrators. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Faculty Senate of Virginia calls upon the Rector and Vice Rector to honor their commitment to work closely with Faculty Senate Executive Council to design and execute search processes for the interim and 10th president that are deeply rooted in the foundational principles of shared governance and whose search committees are comprised of at least 75% UVA employees.

Resolution on the Obligations and Conduct of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors (from ad hoc R&G Committee) • Resolved • The Faculty Senate censures the Board of Visitors for not protecting the University and its president from outside interference, and for not consulting with the Faculty Senate in a time of crisis, actions that are inconsistent with its duties under the Code of Virginia and the Board’s Statement of Visitor Responsibilities; • As stated in its Resolution on the Resignation of President Ryan of June 27, 2025, the Faculty Senate calls for the Board of Visitors to provide the Senate with an immediate and complete accounting of its efforts and activities in response to all inquiries and demands made upon the University by representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice bin the spring of 2025; • In order to ensure its confidence in the Board of Visitors, the Senate calls for the Board to provide the Senate with a full accounting of the specific series of events, and actions taken by the Board that resulted in the resignation of President Jim Ryan, and to honor the Code of Virginia, the Board’s own Statement of Visitor Responsibilities, and the Constitution and Bylaws of the Faculty Senate to most effectively defend the University from external influences going forward.

I had to take the original copy of my diplomma out of the tube and show it to the lady through the glass so she could verify the information on the copy matched the original.

The tube my diplomma came in is obnoxious because UVA diplommas are huge so it was very annoying to carry around all day.

I just graduated from the University about a month ago and I would like to take a moment to remind everybody exactly what the DOJ is so pissed off about. The Department of Justice is pissed off at President Ryan because he refuses to comply with their orders against so-called “illegal DEI”. Now what counts as illegal dei you may ask? Well, according to the Department of Justice, it is admitting non-white students and putting efforts towards supporting first generation and low-income students like me. I grew up in Southwest Virginia and never put an idea into attending University until one of my teachers pulled me aside and was like “Hey, did you know that UVA actually does a lot to support kids just like you?”. It is students like me and students like my friend who founded a chapter of the National Society for Black Physicists at UVA that the Department of Justice wants to erase. This is unacceptable. And I’m going to read this sign over here [points to the left towards a sign]. Uhm, wait can you flip it back over? “It is not about Jim Ryan it is about authoritarian takeover of public education” There are many, many of us who have lots of misgivings about President Ryan, myself included. But it is important to understand it is not about Jim Ryan, it is about the process. The federal government’s interference to oust the President of one of the country’s premier public universities is EXACTLY what Hitlet, Stalin, and Chiang Kai-shek did when trying to take over their countries in authoritarian manners. If you purge the academics, then you think you can purge the society. That’s why we need to resist NOW. Keep fighting, don’t give up, and join the fucking union!

We can not afford to stand down in the face of fascism. Leverage whatever privilege you have to fight back.

I am on the eve of retirement. But before I go, I say in my name and on behalf of all who agree with me that power concedes nothing without a demand. Frederick Douglass taught us that. Frederick Douglass we need to remember the spirit of those who understood struggle who knew it was never ending and the worst you can do in the face of tyranny is to cave. I deeply regret that President Ryan was pressured to resign. I would be dishonest were I to say that I agree with every action president ryan has taken in the name of this university. But that is not the standard here. That is not the standard. No university president should be pressured to resign by a bankrupt illegitimate – ILLEGITIMATE – Department of Justice, which is not worthy of that name. We must collectively do everything in our power to resist this. Authoritarians are never satisfied. They are greedy – they are greedy. You yield one inch and they will keep asking and asking and demanding and demanding. This is no time for silence. This is no time for cowardice. This is no time for retreating. This is the hour of struggle. Thank you!
