One star review of Buy Nothing App: 10/11/2025 Makes me spend money then shut down my page, how is that inline with their mission statement? I started a Buy Nothing group back in January for my rural community on Facebook, spending my own money so it could be officially listed and part of the Buy Nothing community. I’ve poured a lot of time and care into building it up, getting to know people, and creating a space that truly reflected the spirit of community giving. Yesterday, without any notice or explanation, I was removed as admin, the page was suspended, and all members are now being pushed to move to the Buy Nothing app. The app isn’t wretched - it’s clunky, unreliable, and not community-minded in the way Facebook groups are. Besides, in my area not everyone has a smartphone that can run it, making not be inclusive. It’s incredibly discouraging to see all the work, money, and heart I’ve put into this local group completely disregarded. This feels like the opposite of what Buy Nothing is supposed to stand for—connection, generosity, and respect for everyone in the community. I wish they’d shown me the respect of notifying me of this move so I could officially remove the group as a Buy Nothing group and change its name, allowing the community I’ve worked so hard to build to remain intact while still complying with the direction Buy Nothing wishes to go in.

In the last few days, right-wing election groups have submitted some 100,000 new comments to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) urging it to require Americans to show a passport or other citizenship documents when registering to vote. If you are pro-democracy please submit a comment opposing this proposal this before the 10/20 due date, in case the EAC will listen. 1. Copy the comment below or write your own: I’m against requiring citizens to submit a passport, birth certificate, or other citizenship documents to register to vote. Only half of American citizens have a passport and 69 million American citizens don’t have a birth certificate with their current legal name on it, most of them women who changed their names when they got married. 2. The Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub is a six-mile stretch of industrial land in northwest Portland between the Willamette River and Forest Park, where millions of gallons of toxic and explosive liquids are stored in hundred-year-old tanks atop unstable land that will liquefy in an earthquake. As part of the City of Portland's process of updating policies and zoning code to regulate bulk fuel facilities in the CEI Hub, the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) has released a draft plan with four alternative options, only one of which even begins to address the dangers. The City is accepting public comments on these alternatives until October 17. You can email the CEI Hub Policy Project team at ceihub@portlandoregon.gov. Social media post from closet-keys in 2019: the worse climate disaster gets, the more you’ll see closet eugenicists start to advocate for letting people die. you need to be prepared to combat the ideology wherever you see it, because it’s only going to get worse and worse. Read everything having to do with climate disaster critically. If the central argument underlying what’s being said is that the death of disabled and/or racialized people is inevitable, natural, or desirable— that’s a fascist. they might be appear to be a garden variety republican or liberal or even a leftist at first, but know that if that argument is being made, their underlying ideology is one of supremacism, and given additional climate stress, they will become more blatant about it.

How wildfire smoke across Canada and the US can affect mental health Wildfire smoke is linked to health issues like heart attacks and strokes. Research is helping us understand its impacts on our wellbeing. Neuroinflammation caused by wildfire smoke increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Recent research from the Universities of Washington and Pennsylvania found that the odds of a new dementia diagnosis increased about 21% for every 1 microgram increase in the concentration of wildfire particles a person inhales, compared with a 3% increased risk for every 3 microgram jump in non-wildfire particles. What can we do about the mental health effects of wildfires? Curtailing the physiological effects of wildfire smoke on our brains involves many of the same behaviors as protecting the rest of our bodies from air pollution: using an air purifier indoors, thoroughly cleaning living spaces to remove particulate matter that gets inside, wearing a mask outdoors and minimizing unnecessary time spent outside.

We are world-makers, every one—and the same goes for every plant (without which we could not breathe), every animal (beavers are only the most obvious “ecosystem engineers”), every butterfly, every bacterium. Each of us evolved not only to thrive within these niches that we collectively create—but to alter them in turn so that they thrive too. To alter, therefore, one another. We are a vibrant biological puzzle of trillions of pieces, constantly transforming the precise ways we fit together as we unfold in time and space.

I imagine the plan is: 1. CPB shuts down. 2. Already underfunded public stations shut down and surrender licenses to the FCC. 3. FCC/DOJ challenge many remaining station license holders in a manner similar to their attacks on universities; many/most are declared unfit and their licenses are revoked. 4. Conservative religious broadcasters apply and get approval for new FCC licenses for many of the same cities/frequencies. Daily life may feel untouched. Stores stay open. Screens glow. But the architecture of fear works quietly, adjusting the space in which people move, speak, and imagine what’s possible. Its first targets are vulnerable. Its ultimate targets are anyone who resists. Every new site, every court bypass, every data-sharing contract is more than a tool of immigration enforcement. It’s a test of capacity, and of consent. Once the system is in place, all it takes is a redefinition of who counts as a threat.

Dual-Board Certified Adult Psychiatrist records a call with Optum Healthcare Optum Healthcare is a subsidiary of UnitedHealthcare He is contracted to provide services for suicidal veterans with Optum and they’re refusing to pay Optum Rep says “The law doesn’t matter” when the doctor reads the law saying any facility may be used to provide the care if it’s a suicidal case, the insurance company cannot deny payment for services Optum says they will only provide coverage if it’s in a specific building type He again reads the law that says any facility may be used in these cases. The doctor is also contracted with both the VA and with Optum so it should be covered for the patient anyway Optum says “The law doesn’t matter” and denies payment and coverage. I listened to this whole call and it is wild.
