Both the British and the Germans had to use them because imported horses died from local diseases and transport regularly broke down in the harsh conditions. Mass conscription of labour affected local farming & caused starvation & supplies were also taken from locals to feed them. Fascinating topic

They were soldiers, some volunteers and some conscripts who had to carry enormously heavy weights on their backs immense distances across the German African colonies. They died in their hundreds of thousands from disease and exhaustion, they were denied a memorial by both the British and the Germans

I was sceptical about claims of decolonising the curriculum when I did my PGCE (arrogance of a beginner maybe?) but when I realised that it’s just the chance to study and include MORE history not less, it’s so fun to plan and research. The Carrier Corps as part of WW1 is a great example of this imo.

There’s probably a more technologically savvy way of doing this but screenshots of the work will have to do for now. #HistoryTeaching

To my shame I had never heard of them but thanks to David Olusoga’s wonderful book “The Worlds War” our Year 9’s have the privilege of learning about these men and their vital contribution to the Africa campaign in WW1

Although could just cut out the takeaways and forget the jabs and it would have the same effect but that would be the sensible decision
