It’s likely the second option because of the missing TV revenue. That’s what happens when ownership is stuck in a 20th century business model (aka old guys owning & thinking cable is the golden revenue stream) Ray got his championship so all he wants now is to make money - winning is not the focus.
Relievers pop up all the time at weird ages, I wouldn’t sweat that part too much. The question will be whether the Rangers did this to use the savings elsewhere or to pocket the money.
