The state of the world has driven me to drink.... Trying to stick more to beer here, but we'll see how that goes.

The PCA have released the full tables of their pub tenant survey following the release of the summary in May. It may feel abstruse to the average pubgoer, but so much of what's wrong in UK pubs comes down to the tenant-pubco relationship being screwed

Chicken nuggets, melted cheese and sweetcorn with a sweet topping though? It's err - very USian.

It's interesting, it's first time I've used (free) ChatGPT for images. By default it's a bit dull compared to some, but with prompting you can get something that's a bit more...Westminster?

Effect of North Sea production peaking in 1999 is generally underestimated/ignored in UK discussion of economics and politics :

Aim for taxation raised at local level to go from 5% to 30% - still less than Germany or US, but a radical localisation of power.

When you look into it, our provincial cities are poor because they don't have the agglomeration effects of cities in other countries - they need better transport.
October 30, 2025 at 8:12 PM
Same old centralised approach gives the same old results?

The key has surely to be found in our provincial cities - just getting them to be as rich as Eastern European cities, not even as rich as Warsaw or Prague, just Budapest would be a good start.

Starts with a devolved England of the regions

Immediate reactions from UK green hop at Spa Valley - great year for Goldings, but more are doing Ernest to greater or lesser success. Challenger notably lemony rather than orangey this year. Shame other varieties brewed by 'lesser' breweries but enjoyed their efforts even if mostly unsuccessful.
October 17, 2025 at 9:06 PM
You've got to be careful with dry-smurfing though, some varieties are prone to smurf creep.
September 20, 2025 at 12:57 PM
Talking of experimental #hops, it's always fascinating seeing the sheer variety you can get not just in cone shape but plant architecture in breeding plots.

This plant had nothing on the bottom 10', but very dense foliage and cones in a tight cylinder above it.

Also note bracts reverting to leaves

It's a huge thing, affecting both yield and quality and hitting traditional landraces worse - see eg this pic by @longm8.bsky.social from the German drought of 2022 with Mittlefrueh (top right) pretty much worthless but Blanc (bottom left) much happier. 1/n

It feels like there's a new beer style emerging in the UK - new, English Pale or Brithop IPA or WyePA???

On cask
but stronger - 4.5-6%,
Some bitterness
between "a bit hazy" to "somewhat murky",
key #hops are Ernest and Harlequin but always mixed with others from Olicana & Bullion to Mosaic

Off to the beach...

I don't often have nice things to say about Sheps, but I have to say I like the new Whitstable Bay branding.

Whereas I really don't like what Coors have done with their rebrand (the orange on Doom Bar in particular), and not a great fan of the Adnams rebrand from a while back.

PS Meant to give these as examples - BR-8 is dried Brett from Fermentis, Philly Sour is dried Lachancea spp. from Lallemand, WLP4650 Metschnikowia reukaufii is liquid from the Yeast Bay.

Are these wild? No they're landrace yeasts.

Don't often get to see what's on in the Sainsbury #beer shelves, interested to see Nthn Monk in 568ml cans - rare here but become quite common in US as way to make the price the same for cheaper styles. Except £4.25 is most expensive on the shelf, still in main 4-for-3 deal though.

I guess age is also a factor?

They didn't buy all of it back.

Theakston keep rather quiet about the fact Heineken still have 600 out of 2120 shares or 28.3% - Theakston wouldn't count as independent of Heineken under US rules.

Indeed they do, this was the Western Conference final (ie semifinal) of the MLR rugbyball between Seattle and Dallas. Seattle snatched it 28-25 with a last-gasp try.

IIRC beer was Elysian, but stops at 55 minutes.

I also passed two games of cricket (in whites and everything) on way to the ground.

Interesting how much of Fuller's (sorry Asahi UK) accounts are devoted to climate change around pp 8/9, particularly worried about barley, maize and the future of glass, but a comment on hops as well for @stanhieronymus.bsky.social
