I just tearfully and excitedly posted this in a discord and a friend who worked in tech said, “$50 million? That’s it?” I had to explain to her that in the lit nonprofit world, this might as well be a billion dollars. Good news is good news, but man, maybe she’s right—this should be more.

I also recently learned about the Chicane educational pipeline, and how out of 100 students, only 9 will go to a four-year college, only 2 will go to grad school, and only .2 will get a doctoral degree. We are not present in knowledge production, and if we are, there is no interest in our work.

During Latine Heritage month, there was another TikTok where the creator talked about how much they hated Chicane literature. There was too much of a self-insert problem, it’s always about not belonging, struggle, migration trauma, never acknowledging privilege. It got over 500K likes, maybe more.

This TikTok from a Mexican academic is about the total lack of interest in Chicane lit, theory, and knowledge production in Mexico in a time of brutal state violence, surveillance, and dehumanization of Latine migrants and citizens alike. I can’t help but note—this is true in the US as well.

I’m designing a winter workshop for Poets and Writers, so I decided to pick up some Ursula K. Le Guin craft books from my library. I was so pleased to find this little volume with none other than @davidnaimon.bsky.social talking with the GOAT!

Pro-Antifa is doing a few things linguistically. It is obfuscating "anti-fascism," and shortening "antifa" into a foreign-sounding word, effectively erasing "anti" and "fascist" from the concept, and made to sound scary. Put pro- in front of it, and you've got yourself a target to eradicate.

It's frustrating to see people only now catching on to something I've been writing about—Palantir and Anduril, and fantasy as a site of white worldbuilding—since 2019. Here are excerpts from MAGICAL/REALISM, in the essays "The Final Boss" (1-2) and "When We All Loved a Show About a Wall" (3):

Nah. The orcs and Uruk-hai were constructed from Tolkien's deep-seated anxieties toward immigrants from the West Indies infiltrating his perfect little Oxford town. Monsters and migrant anxiety are built from the same fantasy imaginary, as I wrote about in MAGICAL/REALISM (May 2024).

ICE gassed a school. I know the corrections are coming: “no, they gassed a neighborhood so much, it forced them to flee.” The school is in the neighborhood. They gassed the school. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

This is on WorldCon. They should screen people’s questions in advance so this doesn’t happen. If organizers do this for panels I’ve been on—me, a nobody—for someone like GRRM, this should be standard practice. Serious negligence on WorldCon’s part.

I loved this book. And when I learned about its marketing campaign back in the early 2000s, I was FLOORED. They had horse and carriage deliveries of the book in WAX PAPER with a WAX SEAL

Another free music streaming app through the library is Hoopla. They have more current artists’ discographies, like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Taylor Swift, but a smaller selection.

They have the entire Beyoncé, Prince, Solange, Fiona Apple, and MJ discographies, and although it’s not comprehensive, they have a pretty impressive selection.
