RIP Kai Erikson
“The experience of [collective] trauma, at its worst, can mean not only a loss of confidence in the self, but a loss of confidence in the surrounding tissue of family &community, in the structures of…govt, in the larger logics by which humankind lives, in the ways of nature itself…”🧪

No one will ever sum up Bari Weiss's career more succinctly than "what's the point of standards"
“Standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She asks ‘What’s the point of standards?’

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

One fun fact about crabeater seals is that they don’t eat crabs
1/ Crabeater seals are the most abundant top predator in the Southern Ocean and probably the most numerous large wild mammals on earth. Because they live almost their entire lives amongst floating sea ice around #Antarctica, it’s difficult to count them – total population is an estimated 15 million.

Many spiders are named for the way they hunt. This tiny spider is called a Triangle Weaver for the triangle shaped web it makes. They create tension in their web and use it like a slingshot to snare prey - accelerating at up to 1,700 miles per hour per second!

Ogre-faced Net-casting Spiders dangle upside watching for prey and fling a net forward to catch it. The spider has great night vision due to a light sensing membrane that forms in their eyes each night - since they have no irises, the membrane is destroyed at dawn. #Arachtober

Worthy of Criterion Collection.
