The sadness comes from our understanding of what that man has taken from the United States. He is our daily burden and our disgrace. The stain Trump leaves behind will not wash off the flag in our lifetime. The damage has been horrendous.
It's almost impossible to make me feel sorry for Trump, but the sheer depth of his brokeness, combined with his age, the utter humiliation involved in this farce was making me legit sad.
