I met with Dignity in Dying campaigners for the anniversary of the Assisted Dying Bill’s 2nd reading in Parliament.

I’m proud of the strong local campaign in Bath demanding this much needed law, with 83% of residents supporting it.

We must now ensure it continues to progress through the Lords.

Assisted dying "merits detailed scrutiny. It is a different matter if procedural sabotage is the intent... The elected chamber has approved assisted dying & it has the support of most voters. It will be disgraceful if it fails to become law because it is 'talked out' by a clique of unelected peers."

Our loved ones deserve better.
Around 650 terminally ill people end their own lives each year to have control, forced into dangerous, lonely deaths by the cruel status quo.
The assisted dying Bill offers compassion and dignity, letting terminally ill adults stay in control of how and when they die.

These Peers are absolutely right.
"We owe it to dying people to... make the law safe, workable and compassionate."
As Committee begins tomorrow, this is a vital reminder to their colleagues that both the Commons and the public back law change on assisted dying.
NEW: 65 peers have written to all lords urging them not to block the bill.

“It is not our role to frustrate the clear democratic mandate” of the Commons.

Signed by the likes of Neil Kinnock, Ruth Davidson, Robert Winston and others.

Almost two-thirds from just 7 Peers, all longstanding opponents.
They include denying terminally ill Welsh people choice, preventing someone from visiting family overseas or going on a final holiday aborad, and demanding a negative pregnancy test.
Is this really about protecting vulnerable people?
NEW: 942 amendments have been laid down in the House of Lords ahead of the Assisted Dying Bill's committee stage in the chamber, which starts tomorrow.

This is believed to be a record for a bill at committee stage. It's going to be an intense debate.

Prof Sam Ahmedzai: assisted dying can work alongside palliative care. In other countries it often happens at home, with support from community and specialist services. He stresses both should happen in tandem — giving patients timely, quality end-of-life options.

This case is yet more evidence of what we already know: the cruel status quo denies dying people the choice they want and need in the country they call home, and criminalises families' compassion for the people they love at the end of their lives. It is unfit for purpose.
