The entitlement to comfort element of privilege also explains the contradiction of people who say they are allies in one breath but are then more enraged at marginalized people for asking them to stand against bigotry than they are at the bigotry. Because they are ‘allies’ until its uncomfortable, until it’s difficult, until it requires they do something more than repeat platitudes that signal that they are good people. To those who didn't listen, I think that when trans people, including Jessie and I, told you all to not buy that game the reason you got so upset was that it challenged your privilege and comfort, you felt entitled to your comfort media and to enjoying it without having to think about the pesky trans people it hurts. When Jewish people told you not to buy the game because one of the devs was a far right neonazi and the game contained a large amount of antisemitic conspiracy you got so upset because it demanded that you think about the media. When Black people told you not to buy that game because of the franchises repeated defense of slavery you got upset because you didn’t like that it made the work uncomfortable to engage with. If you really want to buy and play those games I cant stop you, no marginalized person has the power to stop you, but we absolutely get to not like you and tell you you’re not an ally, because you are not. Especially in this day and age where it is easier than it has ever been to access art without supporting it monetarily, and there are a million other things you could stream to your fans if you are a creator. You may ignore the author all you like, but her works are still going to influence you, all those elements will still be in the work, and your money is still going to a movement with the explicit goal of ending my community's existence. You can try and separate the art from the artist but you can’t separate the harmful consequences from the actions you chose. When you say death of the author to justify funding trans genocide know the only one who isn’t dying from that choice is the author, and you have done exactly what she wanted. I hope you feel proud, I hope that mediocre AAA open world game is worth showing every trans person your entertainment is more important than our lives. Let me tell you something you have probably needed but never heard before; you are not actually entitled to making any choice you want and never being judged for it. You are not entitled to existing in comfort at the expense of the marginalized people around you, especially when you also think you’re entitled to us liking you. I really wish you would finally see that. The author isn’t dead and she’s using every minute and bit of money she can to make sure I am. Maybe for five seconds you could put aside your comfort and be a human fucking being and care more about lives than a bigoted wizarding world.
