Oh neat! I will check that work out. Yes I think the uncertain waiting context is so fascinating because of that intersection, and then the contrast between the period before where there is still some control vs. after where there's no control but some certainty.

We're currently replicating this study in a sample of medical students amidst end-of-year exams. To disentangle controllability from uncertainty, we are surveying students in the final few days of studying for exams, as well as during the waiting period and once they receive their grades. 📈

While the study this piece is based on was following university students waiting for exams, I think the dos and dont's are useful for any kind of uncertain wait. Here's the full paper, where we show uncertainty seems to mess up some emotion regulation strategies. psycnet.apa.org/record/2025-...

Waiting for exam results can be awful. Our research shows how best to manage the stress
We found those who accepted their emotions, without judgement, felt more positive during the wait. This strategy also worked after students got their results, regardless or what they were.
