In a 1976 article about Puritan funerals, Louise Thatcher Ulrich wrote "well-behaved women seldom make history" to describe well-behaved women that were not studied by historians but the phrase was taken out of context then widely quoted in pop culture.

Pocahontas, whose real name was Matoaka, died in Gravesend, Kent, England, in 1617. She was buried in St. George's Church on 3/21/1617; however, the original church was destroyed by fire in 1727 & location of her grave was lost.

Harriet Beecher Stowe, a staunch abolitionist & prolific author from a prominent political family, released "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in 1852. In this novel, she sought to depict the deplorable & cruel conditions experienced by enslaved African Americans.

Both Marie Curie and her daughter Irène Joliot-Curie won Nobel Prizes. Marie also invented a mobile x-ray ambulance (“Little Curies”). Some 150 women, including Irène were trained to operate them.

Saint Brigid of Ireland (c. 451 – c. 525) is the mother saint of Ireland & one of its 3 national saints. Her feast day is actually held on 2/1 but she is said she to have turned water into beer. Sláinte!

American singer Ella Fitzgerald was the 1st woman & 1st African American to win a Grammy in 1958. She still holds the record for the most recordings by a female artist in the Grammy Hall of Fame. She was a civil rights activist & inspired Marilyn Monroe.

On March 3, 1913, the day before Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated, over 5,000 women marched up in Washington, DC, demanding the right to vote. The 19th Amendment passed in 1920 but the Voting Rights Act didn't pass until 1965.

The woman w/the most Oscars (8) is costume designer Edith Head. Born to a Jewish family in 1897, Head spent 44yrs at Paramount & 14yrs at Universal. She was known for her signature glasses & forthright personality.
