Louise Bourgeois at the Mori Art Museum
"The pink tin is decorated with a motif of "Maman," a spider sculpture that symbolizes Bourgeois’s mother and is also self-portrait. The tin contains milk almonds reminiscent of the white eggs that "Maman" carries in its belly.

Grading Day Two 📃
It’s Sunday so not much can be accomplished but we are on a tight deadline here.
This however, got me off to a great start. If anyone is near a Kaldi, grab this. It transforms your average toast into Kouign Amann. I wished I had bought more back with me here.

She made two versions. The first from the first cut off #suno and the other, a 1hr long track which I use as a pomodoro tracker for grading student essays.

The kenmun sleeps in the hollow of dead trees or are found on banks of rivers, and on boundaries between villages and beaches. They are thought to harm those whom they encounter and children are instructed to avoid going to play in forests or around banyan trees ( known colloquially as gajyumaru).
November 22, 2024 at 8:09 AM
The kenmun was first introduced in the Nanto Setsuwa ( Tales of Southern Islands ) and described to resemble a short, male human child covered in red hair, with fish-shaped eyes, and long dangling limbs.

Introducing a Yokai from Amami Ōshima—the kenmun.
It is said to favour hanging out on top of certain banyan trees and disguises itself by camouflaging its long legs amongst the dangling roots. Its body is covered with reddish brown orange fur, —the orang utan comes to mind.

These rock formations, several kilometres in the sea off the coasts of Amami Ōshima are known as Tachigami. They are landing sites of the Kami (Gods) who visit from spiritual realms located beyond the sea (aka Nirai Kanai). There are several tachigami dispersed along the perimeter of the islands.

When Isson passed away suddenly in 1977, he was unable to fulfil his lifelong dream of a solo exhibition. He had hoped that would give him the recognition he sought from the mainstream art world. But in 2024, the curators of Tanaka Isson: Light and Soul, finally made this dream come.
November 19, 2024 at 6:31 AM
Seashore with Screwpine was the painting I came to see. It is both Isson’s self portrait that speaks to his marginalized position from the art world and of the geopolitics of a once “forgotten “ island of Japan— Amami Ōshima.
November 19, 2024 at 6:16 AM
I travelled 12 hours to get to Tanaka Isson’s exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. It’s down to its last few weeks and the crowds are surpassing 2000 everyday. I waited 40 mins in line with an advanced ticket. Come and experience Nihonga from the Japanese southern islands.

“It is clear why I’ve come here—for the finale—to finish the works that mark my life as an artist.”

In 1958, Tanaka Isson (1908-1977) left mainland Japan for the southern islands of Amami Ōshima, after a series of setbacks in the art world. #tanakaisson 🧵
